RV ALKOR

Launching ceremony (Sept. 11th, 1989):
"Dear guests, I am speaking here on behalf of many German and foreign students of the Institute of Marine Research, who were trained on board the institute's research vessels. The old cutter with the name "ALKOR" has been in service since 23 years and was always involved in the training programms. May this new vessel serve as a platform for coming generations of marine scientists in Kiel in their quest to understand the nature of the sea and to contribute to the protection of the marine environment.

Following an old tradition of mariners the replacement takes the name of the old vessel, and so I refer to the christening address on occasion of the launching of the first "ALKOR" given at the J.G. Hitzler Shipyard in Lauenburg on August 19th, 1965:
» Alkor in the constellation of Ursus major is only one among the innumerable stars in the sky, yet you were selected to serve the navigator. You shall therefore carry the name of this star. «

This new research vessel shall carry the name "ALKOR". I wish you and your crew good luck and much success!"

Mrs. Dipl.-Biol. Annegret Stuhr, September the 11th, 1989, at Cassens Shipyard in Emden
